21st Century, Anybody?

I’ve said it before. I don’t have grass, I have weeds. Weeds that sometimes have pretty flowers like the pictured wild violets.

When I was ten or younger, one of the cartoons I watched on Saturday mornings was The Jetsons. That’s what I thought the year 2000 would be like. How innocent! I saw the shiny parts and not the pollution that the skyline of tall buildings hid. But, who could have imagined this world of manufactured fears, dictators, greed, grift, pogroms, hatred that has, so far, been the 21st century. The worst of human traits have blossomed and putrefied in this first quarter of the 21st century.

It’s not enough for white supremacy to have an underclass that is stupid, they also want to ensure that Blacks are a significant percentage of that underclass.

Put a convicted felon in office, who has blatantly continued his felonious ways, and yes, that felon will find a way to stay in office beyond the reach of the laws that are meant to constrain felons like him. Staying in office is his stay out of jail card.

Seems like a long time ago and it has been years, I asked a friend from one of the Caribbean Islands what the word “makossa” meant. I really liked the song Soul Makossa and thought she might know. She did not and this year, for some reason, I looked it up. “Makossa” is a word of the Duala language that is spoken in Cameroon. I think of its many meanings that “joy” or “dance” would fit the context of the song best. I like “Soul Dance” or “Soul Joy” as its meaning because the song makes me want to move and makes me feel free to express myself in movement. Bit of trivia–Wikipedia says Soul Makossa is the most sampled African song. I would have thought “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” was more well-known!

Greed and the wealth it brings must not be the key to happiness. If so, the wealthy, the acclaimed would not need mood enhancing drugs.

I hear that the United States is the richest country in the world. Rich in what is always my thought rejoinder. Rich in violence, greed, hate, sexism, classism, racism, misogyny, toxic individualism, hypocrites? I wouldn’t brag about any of those riches. If the United States were truly rich–there would be no hunger, no homelessness, no lack of medical care, no education disparity, no decaying infrastructure, no polluted air, water, or environment, no devaluing of children or elders, no poverty. There would be safety nets for life’s contingencies.

So, no…not rich, just a country where if you are ruthless, narcissistic, amoral, you can make a lot of money off the pain you cause. You will then have money to buy the drugs you need to make you feel good about yourself.

Kudos to Senator Cory Booker, the senator from New Jersey who happens to be Black. He out-filibustered the racist Strom Thurmond who held the record for the longest filibuster. Note: Strom Thurmond was the hypocrite racist senator from South Carolina who filibustered against the Civil Rights Act in 1957. You know, he had a sexual relationship with a Black woman (probably not consensual, but coerced), produced a child, but Black people were second class citizens who would never have the same rights and privileges as white people.

Wisconsin sent a loud and clear message to the MAGAs and the South African in particular–our vote is not for sale to the likes of you. The judge backed by the Democrats won a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court after the South African spent millions to buy the election for the MAGA conservative.

Also, Louisiana voters rejected all the constitutional amendments which were supported by the Louisiana Republicans who are doing everything they can to recreate Jim Crow and to once again enshrine it in law.

The stock markets are up and down, like a seesaw, all on the whims of a failed businessman. How to get through to the powers that be in this greed based society that government is not meant to be run like a business. My tax dollars are supposed to be spent on quality of life, not to line a billionaire’s pockets. The Atlantic had an article on the last days of Mussolini. He and his mistress were, without ceremony or trial, shot, and their bodies and some of Mussolini’s minions’ bodies were publicly displayed as the people they had victimized celebrated. Hitler and his wife of one day committed suicide and they were cremated to prevent their bodies from being publicly displayed and ridiculed. So, dictatorships don’t usually end well for the dictator, but the misery they cause society may take a long time to heal.

The hypocrisy that is rampant in the United States is so blatant. Millions of dollars spent so one person can play golf, a military parade to celebrate a birthday…don’t those expenditures qualify as a waste of the taxpayers’ dollars? Why is waste and fraud only found in the programs that benefit the people, not in the government contracts enriching the rich? Waste and fraud found in the programs that benefit the people and a handout and a party for the rich? Blatant hypocrisy!

The most dangerous creation of any society is the man who has nothing to lose. James Baldwin (Or a billionaire who worships greed. Or a felon avoiding prison. Or toddler to adolescent brain development in physically mature males.) Me
